The Music Therapy Ride Committee in Vancouver, with the generous support of Variety – The Children’s Charity, has spent the last year working with legendary producer Garth Richardson and Nimbus School of Recording Arts to create a mobile recording studio for BC Children’s Hospital.
Known as the Band Wagon Legacy Project, this innovative Music Therapy program has been designed to provide hospital patients the ability to create a permanent record of the music composed during their therapy sessions. The mobile recording studio, operating under the name “Band Wagon 1”, will enable Music Therapists within the hospital to visit patients at bedside.
Band Wagon 1 pictured here is the first prototype in Canada and will be presented to BC Children’s Hospital, located at 4480 Oak Street, on Tuesday, July 26 at 2:00pm.
Accredited Music Therapist Brooke Angus works in the Child Life Department at BC Children’s Hospital and says, “Music is the medium that is attractive to children of all ages and it’s a therapeutic form of self-expression when words sometimes fail. With the skills of an accredited Music Therapist and the versatility of the Band Wagon 1, patients from the Oncology, Youth and Intensive Care units will be given the opportunity to express feelings around their difficult treatment regimes and hospital stays using high tech recording equipment, professional microphones, a midi keyboard and various types of guitars. Having access to this innovative streamlined technology allows us to offer tailored musical experiences at bedside and allows patients to seep the benefits of music therapy.”
Shaw Saltzberg, on behalf of the Music Therapy Ride Committee, says: “Our long term ambition is to develop a nation-wide Band Wagon program within three years. We are grateful to our local partners and BCCH for the opportunity to work on the prototype and provide a unique tool for self-expression in combination with patient therapy”.
