New! Helmet with Rear View

Posted by Marissa Baecker | January 30, 2012 | Comments: 0

Jasmin is trying on the Reevu helmet. The first full face helmet with rear view capabilities. It has a small rear view mirror attached the top where Jasmin’s eyes are looking. The helmet is surprisingly light weight and actually allows you to see what is behind you.

We both tried it on and had flash lights waved behind us as though a car was coming upon us at night. We were amazed how well it worked.

The technology from Reevu.com:

“It has taken 7 years of intense research and development to perfect the rear view system that is fitted into every Reevu helmet. The patented multiple mirror system that is fitted within every Reevu helmet is a unique achievement of creative thinking and technical excellence. The mirror system is manufactured from a reflective polycarbonate material rather than glass. Unlike glass, this material is almost impossible to break and is lighter, providing additional safety and comfort to the wearer.

Put simply, this system effectively ‘bends’ the light around the shape of the head – all within the moulding of the helmet – to provide a clear view of the road behind.

Early prototypes were met with absolute astonishment. It is so stunningly apparent from the first moment a Reevu helmet is worn that it will really make a huge difference to the safety of the wearer on our roads.”

While we were both fans of the helmet at the bike show, we have yet to try it out in real riding circumstances but as soon as we do, we will let you know.

Hockey and Motorcycles – why not!

Posted by Marissa Baecker | January 3, 2012 | Comments: 0

As a professional photographer, I (Marissa) am the official photographer of the Kelowna Rockets Hockey Club in the Western Hockey League – you can view action photos of the games on my website at www.shootthebreeze.ca.

So imagine my delight when my two favourite worlds – Hockey and Motorcycles – collided in this very cool, unique – one of a kind of fundraiser? That’s right – one lucky hockey fan will win this Ducati Monster 696 custom Kelowna Rockets motorcycle from Bentley Motorrad. Below is the press release from the Kelowna Rockets.

ROCKETS AND BENTLEY MOTORRAD TEAM UP IN CANCER FUNDRAISER
The Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League and Bentley Motorrad in West Kelowna are pleased to announce a raffle draw and fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society featuring a high-performance 2011 Ducati Motorbike and taking place on each of the Rockets Wednesday home games.

For the remainder of the 2011-12 WHL season, fans that purchase walk-up tickets at Select Your Tickets for a Rockets Wednesday night game will have the chance to win a one-of-a-kind Kelowna Rockets Ducati Motorbike, designed by Bentley Motorrad and featuring the Kelowna Rockets logo and colours.

The raffle will also be a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society which will be selling Cross Check Cancer Energy bracelets at selected Kelowna Rockets games for the remainder of the season. Fans that purchase a unique energy bracelet will receive an entry form for the Ducati motorbike.

“We’re excited to partner with Bentley Motorrad and with the Canadian Cancer Society,” said Anne-Marie Hamilton, Rockets director of marketing. “We hope that we can raise some money for a worthwhile cause and allow one of our fans to win a really unique prize.”

Staff at Bentley Motorrad designed the high-performance Ducati Monster 696 cc motorbike with Rockets colours. Owner Scott Bentley says it turned out beyond expectations.

“It looks spectacular. I don’t think it could have turned out better,” said Bentley, who added that partnering with the Rockets and the Canadian Cancer Society is something that is close to his heart.

“I lost my mom to this terrible disease, so I am passionate about supporting the Canadian Cancer Society,” said Bentley. “We’re excited to get involved with the cancer society and the Kelowna Rockets.”

The Rockets have six Wednesday night home games remaining in the regular season. The first one is this Wednesday, Jan. 4 when the Rockets host Spokane. The Rockets Ducati bike will be on display at all of those games.

From Biker Chick to Biker Chic!

Posted by Marissa Baecker | December 15, 2011 | Comments: 0

Professional stylist, Sam Shakura, is an avid rider but just because us ladies love our bikes doesn’t mean we can’t go from biker chicks to biker chic!

Shakura created her own luxury fashion label, Seven Sins, designed for “the edgy and passionate girl on the run” or in our case, on a bike.

Who says you can’t have style when you ride?

From a unique jewellry collection, to blinged out iPhone covers, to a luxury clothing line with one of a kind pieces right through to home decor, Seven Sins is a style to suit many tastes.

Acquiring Seven Sins pieces is as unique as the brand itself. An exclusive shopping experience with Shakura and business partner, interior design celebrity, Cheryl Gillespie is by appointment only providing each client with a personal, detailed visit. Contact www.samshakura.com and keep checking www.rockhouseofdesign.com as their new website will be launching soon. Grow a stache and win a Night Rod from Harley

Posted by Marissa Baecker | October 29, 2011 | Comments: 1

Ok ladies, for those of you that don’t like facial hair, this is your favourite (blech) time of year. MOVEMBER!

Harley-Davidson, for the month of November, has come up with a limited edition T-shirt in support.

All you dudes get the month to be free, and not shave (and ladies, why don’t we all join them this month and not   shave our legs, underarms, etc. – come on let’s been supportive not to mention save some cash – LOL).

On a serious note, for all those guys out there that can raise $100 during Movember – you will earn an entry form to win a 2012 HD Nightrod Special.

Kane’s Harley-Davidson in Kelowna is hosting a bash at the end of the month for all entrants and fundraisers where you will get shaved to celebrate a hairy month!

What’s Movember? Well, each year, November (Movember) is encourages Canadian dudes to not shave and grow moustaches and get sponsored to raise funds for prostate cancer.

November 1st, register at www.movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month join other “Mo Bros” as they groom, trim, and wax their way into the annuals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, “Mo Sistas” help raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Registered fundraisers receive one ballot entry for every $100 for a random draw of a 2012 VRSCDX Night Rod Special Motorcycle.
In Kelowna, join Kane’s Team ( https://www.movember.com/ca/register/details/team_id/210422) or visit Kane’s Team Site ( http://ca.movember.com/mospace/1353452/)

Before and After

Posted by Jasmin Doobay | October 12, 2011 | Comments: 0

Near the end of riding season last year, Marissa, Kathy and I were out with our photographer Tim Swanky to get some new shots of us on our bikes.  We had a fabulous day in the mountains and got some great shots that we posted back in October or November 2010.  We really had just a few weeks left in the season and found a beautiful sunny day to get this shoot done.  All went well, we got some great pictures and as we were wrapping up, Tim and I decided to go back to Kathy’s for a bite to eat.  Now we were in her neighbourhood and had already been by her house earlier that day…so I’d already been down the driveway but I wasn’t going to make it down a second time.  Kath lives in the hills and has a dirt/gravel/rock driveway that even in a car I find steep.  We’re talking fall here, so the pine needles were coming down too.  So the first time I head down the driveway on the bike, I’m crawling and I’m nervous because I sense it’s going to be tough…but I make it…phew.  After the shoot, I try for the second time…but I don’t make it.

One second I’m on the bike…the next second I’m on the ground, on my right side and the bike’s down too.  Ouch.  Pretty sure I cracked a rib in the process…but worse for me at the time was the damage to my beautiful candy lime green Kawi.  I broke off the right mirror, scratched the crap out of the side panels, broke the plastic in two places and bent the brake pedal a bit.  WAAAAA!

Big lesson for me, that no one had told me up until that point, DON”T grab your front brake when you’re going downhill on gravel.  Wish I’d have known that one a lot sooner.

I got the mirror fixed right away and decided to wait on getting the panels replaced because I was quoted $500 and needed to save my pennies.  I figured I’d keep the bike for another season and ride it as is, then fix it when I went to sell it sometime before my extended warranty ended.

Oh and another time I’d put a scratch in my gas tank because I’d put my tank bag on the ground and the magnets picked up a rock, then when I dragged my tank bag off one day the rock left it’s mark.

So mid-summer this year, I rode my bike to a radio broadcast that I was doing at a body shop in Kelowna.  Jeff and Mike own Maxum Autobody and Jeff is a big fan of riding.  At last count I think he’s got 4 bikes.  Jeff took one look at my gas tank scratch and said he’d fix it for me.  A few minutes later, he brought my bike back without the foot long scratch and I was blown away.  That’s when he told me he could fix the rest of the scratches, dents and breaks too.  Yippee!

So if a picture is worth a thousand words…then here are the before the after shots of my bike…

Now keep in mind, the before pictures are indoors with my 12 megapixel camera.  The after pictures are outdoors with my 5 megapixel iPhone.  So we’re not exactly comparing apples to apples with the quality of the pictures.  You have to admit though…nice job on fixing the broken parts and scratches!

So if you’re searching for body and paint work, Jeff loves custom stuff and he loves bikes…and he’s a great guy too!

5 Harleys & A Ninja

Posted by Jasmin Doobay | August 2, 2011 | Comments: 0

Had an amazing ride recently with 5 lovely ladies, in fact they’re the Ladies of Harley – Okanagan – HOG.

Brenda on her ‘09 Streetglide, Elaine on her ‘11 Superlow, Donna on her ‘09 883 Sportster Low, Linda on her ‘11 Heritage Softtail and Sharon on her ‘04 Heritage Softtail named “Thriller” took me on a cruise through the South Okanagan.  We left West Kelowna, travelled through the hills of Summerland and on to Naramata Pub for a bite to eat.

Little did we know it was Wednesday Wing Night and the place was packed, but didn’t we cut a swath through the crowd, 6 women in our leathers and out for an evening of sharing and laughter.  Thank you ladies for being so welcoming to a complete stranger!  I love that these ladies are business owners, business women, mom’s, wives and all incredibly good friends.  The caring factor was amazing as evidenced by the emails later that night to and from everyone, making sure all were home safe.

If you’re interested in hooking up with some fabulous women for a ride, they usually go out the last Wednesday of the month, meeting around 5:30 for a group ride and dinner.  Beginners are welcome!

Music Therapy Band Wagon

Posted by Marissa Baecker | July 19, 2011 | Comments: 0

Working as a music photograher and entertainment columnist, I met some great people in the music world. Patrick Zulinov, formerly of Sony Music now the Assistant Program Director of The Shore radio station in Vancouver, and publicist Teresa Trovato – both now working with the Music Therapy Ride sent this press release – definitely worth a read and mark September 17, 2011 in your calendar now for the Music Therapy Ride.

WHAT:  PRESENTATION OF “BAND WAGON 1” TO BC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

WHERE: BC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL’S MAIN LOBBY AT 4480 OAK STREET IN VANCOUVER

*WHEN:  TUESDAY, JULY 26 AT 2:00pm

*Media must arrive by 1:30pm and check in with Teresa Trovato in the main lobby of BC Children’s Hospital.  Once all media is checked in, they will be escorted to the event.

The Music Therapy Ride Committee in Vancouver, with the generous support of Variety – The Children’s Charity, has spent the last year working with legendary producer Garth Richardson and Nimbus School of Recording Arts to create a mobile recording studio for BC Children’s Hospital.

Known as the Band Wagon Legacy Project, this innovative Music Therapy program has been designed to provide hospital patients the ability to create a permanent record of the music composed during their therapy sessions.  The mobile recording studio, operating under the name “Band Wagon 1”, will enable Music Therapists within the hospital to visit patients at bedside.

Band Wagon 1 pictured here is the first prototype in Canada and will be presented to BC Children’s Hospital, located at 4480 Oak Street, on Tuesday, July 26 at 2:00pm.

Accredited Music Therapist Brooke Angus works in the Child Life Department at BC Children’s Hospital and says, “Music is the medium that is attractive to children of all ages and it’s a therapeutic form of self-expression when words sometimes fail.  With the skills of an accredited Music Therapist and the versatility of the Band Wagon 1, patients from the Oncology, Youth and Intensive Care units will be given the opportunity to express feelings around their difficult treatment regimes and hospital stays using high tech recording equipment, professional microphones, a midi keyboard and various types of guitars.  Having access to this innovative streamlined technology allows us to offer tailored musical experiences at bedside and allows patients to seep the benefits of music therapy.”

Shaw Saltzberg, on behalf of the Music Therapy Ride Committee, says:  “Our long term ambition is to develop a nation-wide Band Wagon program within three years.  We are grateful to our local partners and BCCH for the opportunity to work on the prototype and provide a unique tool for self-expression in combination with patient therapy”.

THE RIDE: September 17, 2011
The Music Therapy Ride Committee is comprised of members of the Vancouver music industry with representatives from booking agencies, radio stations, record labels, talent managers, concert promoters and recording artists.  The Music Therapy Ride is a charity ride from Vancouver to Whistler designed to raise funds for the community-based music therapy services in British Columbia.

The 10th annual Music Therapy Ride will take place on September 17, 2011.  All motorcycles and cars will roll out from the River Rock Casino Resort at 9:30am and will be escorted by the VPD’s Motorcycle Drill Team to the Garibaldi Lift Company in Whistler, where a barbeque lunch and live auction will take place.

As a result of ten years of dedication, support and generosity, the Music Therapy Ride has raised over $350,000 for the Music Therapy Trust Fund.

For more information on how to join this year’s ride or to make a donation, please visit http://www.musictherapyride.org.

Pen High Class of 2011 led in style

Posted by Marissa Baecker | June 29, 2011 | Comments: 0

Tom Doratti

Bud Lindquist

Students at Penticton High School held their prom June 29 and the evening’s festivities began with a parade down Main Street led first by a police escort and second by two Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Grads ‘make an entrance’ at their prom in their own style ride – convertible, flat deck truck, boats, skateboards etc. – the entire town lines both sides of the street to watch the parade of grads decked out and on their way to the ball.

This was my first witness of a grad parade. When the event was over, I stopped to talk with the two motorcyclists who led the procession and found out that they were both teachers at Pen High.

Bud Lindquist, a 28 year veteran law and history teacher, together with fellow faculty member, Tom Doratti, a 27 year leader in electronics and sciences – upheld a 7 year tradition by leading the class of 2011 to the ball. However, 2011 marks the end of their riding together as this year both are retiring from the profession (as you can see by their handlebars) lol.

Important – Victory Cross Country owners!

Posted by Marissa Baecker | June 9, 2011 | Comments: 0

A quick note on the recent recall to keep you up to date:  Victory recently became aware of three reports of loose handlebar clamps on Model Year 2011 Cross Country motorcycles in the US.  In each of these instances, the condition was observed and corrected by the dealer during the dealer set-up process.  No accidents or injuries have been reported.  Nonetheless, Victory recognized that this condition, if undected and uncorrected during dealer set-up, could potentially cause an operator to lose control.  For this reason, Victory issued on a recall on all potentially affected MY 2011 Cross Country motorcycles to have each of these motorcycles inspected for loose handlebar clamps.  In the event this condition is detected, it will be corrected at no cost to the owner.  Victory takes the safety of its riders and its legal reporting obligations seriously, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this process.  Please call Victory at 1-888-704-5290 if you have any questions regarding this process.

New digital gear display

Posted by Marissa Baecker | June 8, 2011 | Comments: 0

When test riding all the different bikes, I really like the digital gear display. Now Harley-Davidson has one to offer.

The new Digital Gear Indicator (P/N 70900038 Chrome, P/N 70900078 Black; $219.95) is conveniently located on the handlebar for line-of-site viewing, the bright LED display is easy-to-read with a quick glance (Galz not included).

“When the clutch is out, the display indicates the current gear, or a large “N” when the transmission is in the neutral position. A built-in photocell automatically adjusts the display for improved visibility in direct sunlight, and dims the display at night to reduce distraction. Plug-and-play installation requires no wire splicing or complicated programming. Available in chrome or satin black finish, the complete kit includes a self-contained LED and control module, control housing, wiring harness and required mounting hardware. Fits many 2007-later VRSC, Sportster®, Dyna®, and Touring models, and 2007-10 Softail® models. It may not fit with some other accessories. See an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer for fitment details.”

Father’s Day suggestions for your Harley Dad

Summer is approaching and that means long rides are currently being planned in kitchens across the country or while watching the run for the Stanley Cup. What better gift to buy dad than some new cargo/luggage for his vacation wheels? The new Tour-Pak® Rack Bag (P/N 93300006, $199.95) mounts to a Tour-Pak luggage rack in a snap. A plastic reinforced tub maintains the bag’s shape and protects the treasures gathered along the way. “This bag features large exterior pockets with glove-friendly, ergonomically contoured zipper pulls, and an oversize custom handle. Details include two zippered exterior side pockets, one zippered top pocket, and three zippered mesh interior pockets. The bag can also be equipped with an optional Premium Shoulder Strap for easy handling. Dimensions: 20.5 inches W x 13 inches D x 9.5 inches T. Capacity: 2000 cubic inches. Fits models equipped with Tour-Pak, Trike or Sidecar Luggage Racks (except Mini Rack).”

This is one of eight new pieces in the Harley-Davidson Premium Luggage Collection. Visit your local Harley-Davidson retailer.
